Hill Street... but definitely not got the blues...

Simple tour today. Meeting a friend for lunch in Sauchiehall Street so thought I would just walk from the Buchanan Street end up to Charing Cross taking photo of the familiar landmarks on the way. Simple?

But was a wee bit early and before I knew it Garnethill had seduced me up there, teasing me with glimpses of church steeples and little corners. Once up there realised it was a special little part of Glasgow. I had never walked around here before but will need to come back another day. Here are some the the things I saw ... Sauchiehall going to have to wait a while longer...

St. Aloysius church in Rose Street. A really beautiful building built in 1910. This amazing church spire is one of the things that drew me up onto the hill.

The amazing wall mosaic in Garnethill Park. I didn't even know this park existed. The mosaic has incredible detail. One of those works of art that you seem to keep finding new things each time you look at it. Here is it's story .. http://www.tones.demon.co.uk/garnethillpark/

Unusual artwork on the end of the building overlooking Garnethill Park.
I love finding these little details in a city.

The path in the park has paving stones engraved with quotes from local residents. This one is about a lorry rolling down Garnethill into Sauchiehall Street. Real bit of Glasgow culture.

Garnethill is also the home of the Glasgow School of Art. This famous building is a real Glasgow landmark as it was designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. A beautiful example of his work. These photos are just a couple of angles on the building. We are very proud of Mackintosh in Glasgow. And so we should be. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Rennie_Mackintosh
His buildings and work will appear in more blogs ahead.

Garnethill Synagogue. The oldest synagogue in Scotland founded in 1879.
It is a another beautiful building tucked away on Hill Street.

Not what you expect to find a couple of blocks from Sauchiehall Street. Beautiful little garden up on Hill Street. Full of cottage garden flowers. Bees where loving the sunny day and this little oasis.

And around the corner. An amazing little ground floor flat called "The Cottage".

I liked this photo cause not only does it show the beautiful architecture of the Garnethill School building but also the Glasgow humour. Someone had drawn chalk faces on the stone balls on top of the wall each with a different expression. Wasn't sure whether to blame the school kids getting about or the fact that the School of Art students are only a couple of blocks away?
Difficult to show the feeling of a place in a few photos. But well worth having a wander around here if you in the area. Another different Glasgow from yesterday. Not the grandeur of a cathedral but beauty in lots of little details. That is what I am starting to learn through this blog. Glasgow has so many different aspects. And I've only really scratched the surface. Hope you liked some of the images from "The Day".
